PORT ALLEN — A man is facing five charges, including possession of a machine gun, after a brief vehicle pursuit ended near Avenue C and S. 12th Street on Thursday evening.

Ali X. Jones was arrested by Port Allen Police Department C-Shift officers after he failed to stop for a traffic violation and led officers on a short chase, according to a press release from Chief Donovan V. Mitchell.

While fleeing police in the 1100 block of Avenue C, Jones discarded a firearm from the vehicle before coming to a stop near 12th Street, the release states. Officers recovered the weapon after a citizen tip.

The firearm was identified as a Glock handgun equipped with an attached sear — commonly known as a "Glock switch" — an illegal component that converts a semi-automatic handgun into a fully automatic machine gun. A search also turned up a digital narcotics scale and approximately 53 grams of marijuana.

Jones was booked into the West Baton Rouge Parish Correctional Facility on charges of failure to stop at a stop sign, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession of a firearm while in possession of a controlled dangerous substance, possession of a machine gun, and obstruction of justice.

All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
