Presumed innocent Until Proven Guilty

ADDIS, La. — The mother of a seven-year-old girl who died following a domestic violence incident Wednesday evening has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder.

Breyonne D. Dorsey, 30, of Addis, was taken into custody and booked on the following charges, according to a press release issued Friday by the Addis Police Department:

  • Second-degree murder
  • Two counts of felony domestic abuse battery – child endangerment
  • Principals
  • Obstruction of justice

Addis Police Chief Jason Langlois confirmed to WBR Independent that Dorsey is the child's mother. The principals charge means Dorsey is accused under Louisiana law of participating in or aiding in the commission of the murder.

The arrest comes one day after the department issued a warrant for Christopher Butler on charges of second-degree murder and two counts of felony domestic abuse battery – child endangerment in connection with the same incident. As of Friday afternoon, Butler has not been apprehended and police are asking for the public's help locating him.

The charges stem from an incident on the evening of Wednesday, July 1, when officers were dispatched around 9:47 p.m. to a residence in the 8000 block of LA Highway 1 South regarding an unresponsive child. Officers found the girl suffering from critical injuries and initiated lifesaving efforts before she was transported to a local children's hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

Detectives determined that an alleged domestic violence incident had occurred inside the residence involving Butler and an adult female. During the altercation, furniture was reportedly overturned and the child sustained fatal injuries, according to the department.

Witness statements and evidence collected at the scene were used to establish probable cause.

The investigation remains active and involves the coordinated efforts of the Addis Police Department and its law enforcement partners. Additional charges may be considered as the case progresses.

The department extended its condolences to the family and loved ones affected by the incident.

Anyone with information regarding Butler's whereabouts is urged to contact the Addis Police Department at (225) 687-2222, the West Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office, or their local law enforcement agency. Police are advising the public not to approach or attempt to apprehend Butler.

Both suspects are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
