Two Families Displaced After Duplex Fire on Avenue B

A Sunday evening fire at a duplex on Avenue B in Port Allen displaced two families, according to the West Baton Rouge Fire Department.

WBR Fire/EMS responded to the 1000 Block on Avenue B shortly before 7 p.m. and found a fire that had started in the attic, where the preliminary cause was traced to an air conditioning unit, according to the fire department.

The fire was contained to one side of the duplex, preventing it from spreading to the adjoining unit. No injuries were reported.

Firefighters responded with five engines, a ladder truck and a medic unit. Crews could be seen in rehab operations as supply lines stretched across the street.

The fire department said the fire was quickly extinguished and credited the response for limiting property damage.

With summer temperatures pushing air conditioning systems to their limits, the fire department urged residents to have their AC units inspected regularly and to keep vents clear of obstructions.
