West Baton Rouge Parish is under a burn ban, effective immediately.

The parish issued the ban Tuesday, Oct. 27, because of extremely dry conditions and the risk of wildfires, according to a parish news release.

No outdoor open burning is allowed anywhere in the parish. That means no burning leaves, grass, limbs, yard debris or anything else.

A few fires are still allowed under Louisiana law: lawful agricultural burning, prescribed burns, and cooking or recreational fires kept inside a proper fire pit or enclosure.

The parish made the call after talking with fire officials and Emergency Preparedness Director Deano Moran. The ban stays in place until Parish President Jason Manola lifts it. The parish said it will announce when that happens.

Five days earlier, at the Oct. 22 parish council meeting, Manola said the parish didn't see a need for a burn ban yet but would keep watching conditions. By Oct. 26, most of the parishes around West Baton Rouge were already under bans, including East Baton Rouge, Iberville, Pointe Coupee and West Feliciana, according to the state's burn ban map.
