Iberville Parish voters will choose a new at-large member of the parish School Board on Nov. 3\. Early voting runs through Tuesday, Oct. 27.

Three candidates qualified in August: Becky Sue Bickham Landry, Demetrius Franklin and Jeanne Bujol Medine. The WBR Independent sent each the same four questions. Here are their answers, lightly trimmed for length.

## Becky Sue Bickham Landry

Bickham Landry, who has no party affiliation, retired after 44 years in Iberville Parish schools. She said she worked as a classroom teacher, coach, bus driver, administrator and transportation coordinator. She holds a bachelor's degree in health and physical education and a master's degree plus 30 hours in supervision and administration. Her three children attended Iberville Parish public schools.

"I care deeply about our children and want to help ensure the best possible academic outcomes for every student," she said. She said her range of jobs in the district "prepared me to make informed, responsible decisions that put students first."

She called declining enrollment the biggest issue and said she would work with the board and district leaders "to identify the reasons for this decline and develop strategies to attract and retain students." She also named transparency and parent involvement as priorities.

On funding, she said, "My campaign is self-funded. I am investing my own resources because I believe in my vision and am committed to serving the people."

## Demetrius Franklin

Franklin, a Democrat, said he has nearly three decades of experience as a teacher, coach and school administrator, including roles as assistant principal, academic director and chief operating officer. He said he helped establish two all-boys charter schools in New Orleans and is pursuing a doctorate. His email signature lists him as assistant principal at Laurel Middle School in New Orleans.

"I believe every child deserves a fair opportunity to succeed, and every family deserves to have a voice in their education," he said. He said he wants to "serve the entire parish without favoritism."

He said the biggest issue is "ensuring every student has the resources, support, and opportunities needed to succeed, regardless of which school they attend." He said he would start by listening to teachers, parents and students and reviewing academic data, and would push for tutoring, more career and technical education, and fair distribution of resources.

On funding, he said, "My campaign is supported by my own contributions and donations from people in the community who believe in me and share my commitment to education and our children's future."

## Jeanne Bujol Medine

Medine, a Democrat, spent more than 30 years in Iberville Parish schools as a teacher, assistant principal and principal before retiring last year.

"Every child, every teacher and every school in Iberville Parish deserves a strong advocate, and I intend to be that voice," she said. She said she would bring experience "developing and executing strategic plans and efficiently managing budgets" to the board.

She said the biggest challenge is making sure "every single student receives a quality education." She said that takes supported teachers, safe schools and engaged families, and she named teacher recruitment and retention and managing resources across the system. "I will make decisions by asking, 'What is best for our children?'" she said.

On funding, she said, "I am funding the majority of my campaign personally." She also said she has contributions from family, former co-workers and friends, and that every donation is recorded in her campaign finance report.

## What the campaign finance reports show

Each candidate filed a report with the Louisiana Board of Ethics covering money raised and spent through Sept. 24\. All three reports show the candidates putting in their own money.

Bickham Landry loaned her campaign $28,600 and reported $600 in contributions, $300 each from Boaz Towing and Verret Shipyard. She had spent $15,798.94 and reported $13,401.06 on hand.

Medine contributed $10,000 of her own money and reported $9,901 from 12 other donors, for $19,901 total. The largest outside contributions were $5,000 from Charles Bujol and $2,000 from Regrets-None LLC. She had spent $12,865.53 and reported $7,035.47 on hand.

Franklin loaned his campaign $1,264.51 and spent all of it. His report shows no outside contributions through Sept. 24.
