BRUSLY — Brian Carter used to drive past the building every day on his way to work.

He was running commercial HVAC at the time, but he kept his eye on the little spot off the road. Never saw much traffic. Never saw much of anything, really.

Then one night, after a long day, he sat down and opened Facebook Marketplace. Just browsing. And there it was. The building was for rent.

Carter already had a side hustle going: an Italian ice trailer he ran with his son, built around a baseball theme. He called the building's owner, pitched the idea of expanding into concession-style snacks, and brought his wife over to check the place out.

"We figured we could make it work," he said.

That was the beginning of The Batter's Box Snack Shop.

## The name on the building

The Batter's Box is baseball through and through. The menu reads like a lineup card: Waffle Bats, Breakfast Knuckle Balls, the Base Hit Banana Waffle, the Berry Bonds Belgium Waffle, and the Balk Box, a three-piece chicken tender and fries combo.

The whole family pitches in on the names.

"Being from Pittsburgh, we grew up in the sports arena, football, baseball, hockey," Carter said. "A lot of people went with football, so we wanted to do something different."

His wife, Angie, was a softball player. She played catcher. They brainstorm together and see what sticks.

Even the K's scribbled on the posted menu are a reference. In baseball, fans in the stands slide K cards onto the scoreboard when a pitcher records a strikeout. At The Batter's Box, the K marks items that have been struck from the menu.

The name he's most proud of? The Batter's Box itself.

Not everyone gets the references, he admits. Some parents aren't into baseball and don't know what a base hit or a home run means on a menu. That doesn't seem to bother him.

## The Bussin' Burrito

The signature item, the one painted on the building, came from a teenager's kitchen.

Carter's son used to make oversized burritos every morning before school: eggs, cheese, sausage, bacon, hash browns, everything he could fit in a tortilla. He'd eat some and share the rest with his friends.

One day the kid came home and said, "My friend told me I make a bussin' burrito."

Carter didn't know what "bussin'" meant. He looked it up. Turns out, it was a compliment.

When the shop needed a go-to breakfast item, the name was already waiting. The Bussin' Burrito is a flour tortilla stuffed with cheese, scrambled eggs, ground breakfast sausage, bacon crumbles, and seasoned shredded hash browns, served with a side of their signature salsa. It runs $8.

It's not the kind of breakfast burrito that leaves you wondering where the food went. The hash browns give it bulk, and everything else fills the gaps. There's a reason it's on the sign.

## Beyond the burrito

Breakfast runs from 6 a.m. to 10:30, but Carter said they'll push it into lunchtime depending on the crowd.

The rest of the menu keeps the concession-stand feel. Quarter-pound all-beef hot dogs, nachos with seasoned ground meat and fresh tortilla chips, soft pretzels with cheese or honey mustard, and flavored popcorn in three varieties: Oreo Krunch, S'mores Krunch, and Banana Krunch.

The Italian ice is what started it all, back in the trailer days. They carry 18 flavors, including Tigers Blood, a blend of coconut, strawberry, orange, and watermelon. Every month they roll out a new flavor through their rewards program. Members get first access before it hits the public menu.

That rewards program, small as the shop is, already has about 85 members. Some show up five or six days a week. One couple has been there since day one, almost every day.

"We have customers who knew us from the Italian ice trailer and drive over from East Baton Rouge across the bridge for breakfast," Carter said.

## Putting down roots

The Carter family moved to the area from Pittsburgh, and they're settling in.

Carter said they're working to source more ingredients locally, from produce for their salsa to fruit for the waffles. They have their eye on Louisiana-grown cane sugar for their lemonade and sweet tea.

"Being from up North and coming down here and seeing the agricultural side of sugarcane, what it means to the state of Louisiana, we want to incorporate that," he said.

Local schools and teams have started reaching out. A volleyball coach asked about pregame meals. Events with West Baton Rouge schools are in the works.

When asked what the best thing a customer ever said to him was, Carter didn't hesitate.

"Thank you for bringing this to Brusly."

## Our take

WBR Independent stopped by The Batter's Box on a Friday morning in September to see it for ourselves. We ordered the Bussin' Burrito, the Base Hit Banana Waffle, a traditional breakfast plate with grits, eggs, bacon, and sausage, and the Balk Box chicken tenders.

The banana waffle deserves its own paragraph. The waffle itself tastes like banana bread. It's topped with crumbled vanilla wafers, like banana pudding, and comes with banana slices. It's banana bread and banana pudding and a Belgian waffle all at once, and it works.

The breakfast plate was good all around. The sausage patty was tender with a little kick, not tough the way some patties get. The burrito was filling and loaded, not the kind that's 90 percent tortilla.

The Italian ice, per our taster, "actually tastes like real Italian ice, and not that fake stuff they try to sell you in a grocery store." Spunky, my wife Courtney, approved.

## If you go

The Batter's Box Snack Shop is at 110 N Vaughan Dr in Brusly. Breakfast is served daily from 6 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Snacks and Italian ice are available during regular hours.

They're on Facebook and encourage Google reviews. A rewards program is available at the window.

"You can walk up to this window at any point in time, and we're always having a conversation," Carter said. "We got a greenhouse right outside. You might catch me sitting out there drinking a cup of coffee, watching the trains and traffic go past. If there's anything you want to ask or want to know, feel free."
